Rainbow Journeyman, travelling along the North Cornwall Coast…… ever mindful of the piracy that took place among these coves and cleaves in years past, has tried to capture some of this spirit in this tiny village - see our images of Boscastle
Tinged with sadness at the loss, we were fortunate to have been able to photograph Boscastle before the terrible flood of 2004: a flood that devastated many Cornish harbours and stole so much of their well respected history.
You descend into this village from the Western upper road, catching glimpses of the tiny harbour set like a multi coloured cultured pearl amid angular rock, fern and foliage.
The road traverses two tight s bends to reach the harbour “floor”. Finally crossing the river by way of a stone bridge, below a point where the rivers Valency and Jordan meet; and enters this beautiful medieval harbour, which divides the final parts of the village nearest the sea into two eventual headlands.
Our Journeyman’ lens has captured the mixture of Old and New. Buildings, dating back to the Circa 14th century, rubbing shoulders with modern tourism. Solid quarried stone shops pubs and dwellings stand foursquare among the plastic buckets and spades required for the mixture of ages that visit this Cornish jewel.
Our instruction to our Journeyman, as always, was to keep the spirit and history alive and concentrate on the trading history of the village.
We feel he has captured these images in the strength of the paint blistered, Carvel built boats, resting or nibbling their anchor slips away from the harbours stony strength.
The fishermen’s lobster creels make a colourful splash against the ironstone hued strike of the rock face that has sheltered fishermen as they worked in all weathers over the centuries unloading their catch for market.
The Harbour Light, a building regrettably lost in the flood, pictorially stands on the right of the harbour. Its rafter stringers long collapsed to give it a mellow well used look. Every turn and corner something to see..

Now here is a place that many people ignore in their rush to get to the Eden Project or Flambards. They dash past this beautiful Cleave, maybe put off a little by the sign which points to The Slate Quarries. For this is an area renowned for its beautiful Delabole Slate - see Trebarwith photos
Breaking away from the main road takes you through yet another beautiful Cornish Valley. Watch out for the Mill House Hotel on your right hand side as you descend the valley towards Trebarwith Strand. And note to your left and right the scenic headlands that rise away from this picturesque valley. The walking is spectacular.
Our Journeyman’s camera photographed several unique ever-changing light patterns which crisscross this stretch of golden sand. This has tempted us to visit this site on more than one occasion. The river rushes and winds down through the valley cutting the soft rock into sculpted shapes that would make Henry Moore proud. Spreading its way in forceful rivulets across the lower beach, it reaches the surf; the freshwater and the salt water mix, painting patterns on the sand which change with every tidal move.
The cliffs surrounding the west of the bay form canopies of dark rock in which are set spectacular caves.
